The Scarsdale Medical Diet promises a quick weight loss of up to 20 pounds in just two weeks: you can lose an average of a pound a day on this diet.

The Scarsdale Diet was created by Dr. Herman Tarnowerby in the 1970s. It involves the restriction of the intake of a group of carbohydrates during a 7 to 14 days plan with meals consisting of vegetables, fruits, and lean sources of protein. Daily food amounts are unlimited.

 

 

Scarsdale Diet Principles

The diet is based on the idea that when carbohydrates are restricted, the body will break down glucose stores to obtain glucose for energy, thus releasing stored water resulting in a weight loss as a consequence.

Scarsdale Diet Tips

  • chew your food thoroughly
  • drink at least 4 glasses of water a day
  • allow at least two hours in between meals
  • whenever you feel hungry, take advantage of the carrots and celery to snack on
  • avoid alcoholic beverages

 

The Truth about the Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdales diet is a very restrictive one. It restricts the intake of major food groups therefore being very unhealthy. The loose of body water might result in a weight loss in the short term, but this weight loss cannot be sustained in the long run. Dieters will regain all of the weight back and then some.
